Home : Move In Checklist  : Move Out Checklist : Lab Estimate Form

When vacating laboratory facilities you are responsible for leaving laboratories suitable for re-occupancy and/or renovation. The following checklist should be completed by the laboratory prior to the move. Notify Hollander Storage and Moving at least two weeks in advance of the move.

Housekeeping
  • Remove broken glassware and non-contaminated sharps.
  • Decontaminate all laboratory equipment work surfaces and supplies.
  • Package all glassware & supplies in boxes. Do not over pack boxes. Keep boxes less than 30 pounds.
  • Remove all supplies from drawers, shelves, and cabinets.
  • Broken equipment, such as refrigerators, may need to be discarded. However, equipment that could possibly be contaminated with radioactive, chemical or biohazardous material must be decontaminated and checked first.

Biohazardous Materials
  • Disinfect all work surfaces that may be contaminated with biological agents.
  • Disinfect and dispose all potentially biohazardous waste.
  • Place all sharps in sharps containers and dispose of properly.

Radioactive Materials
  • Survey facility and equipment for contamination as appropriate.
  • Clean surfaces and equipment if contamination is detected.
  • Request Radioactive waste pickup service, Hollander cannot relocation radioactive materials.

Chemical Safety

  • Remove all laboratory chemicals including waste from laboratory.
  • Remove all empty bottles and cans. The containers must be empty, rinsed out, and the cap removed before placing into the regular trash.
  • Empty the fume hoods and wipe down all inner surfaces.
  • Remove disposable liners/covers from work surfaces.
  • Wash laboratory bench tops with soap and water.
  • Run water into all sinks and floor drains to fill traps.
  • Request hazardous waste pickup service if required.
  • Movement of heavy items by lab staff can result in injury. Movement of these items should be done by professional moving crews.

Move Related Tasks
  • Hollander can have moving cartons available before you begin.
  • To avoid unnecessary costs package and move lab items only during normal business hours between 8:00am and 5:00pm. (Monday through Friday)
  • Movers will inventory all items
  • Items will be tagged according to a numeric and color coded system
  • Movers will not touch an item if marked Red
  • Although you personally may not be moving your laboratory contents, you may be packing boxes, moving items out of your way, and stretching and bending over and around objects to prepare for the move.
  • To prevent back strain: Nevertwist, lift an object above shoulder height, extend or reach to pick up an object. These are the main causes of back injuries.
  • If you must reach for an object in front of you, support your upper body weight by leaning on a desk or table. If possible, move the obstruction out of your way, climb up on it (if it is safe to do so), or ask for help.
  • Lift with your leg muscles, not your back. For light objects below waist level, you can counterbalance rather than squat.
  • If it is too heavy to move alone, wait for the professional moving staff to assist you.
